1.Bundoran Glowball
If you’re looking for a fun family outing in County Donegal, Bundoran Glowbowl and Macks Amusements is a great place to start to have things to do in Donegal in the rain.
They’ve got 10-pin kid-friendly bowling balls, ramps, and side bumpers to make the game even more kid-friendly.
Even if you’ve never bowled before, their helpful staff will guide you through the game and answer any questions you might have about it.
All members of the family, young and old, are welcome all in this establishment, which is also wheelchair & stroller friendly.

2. Waterworld Bundoran
One of the greatest family-friendly things to do in Donegal in July is to visit Bundoran’s Waterworld if you are nearby.
A wide range of slides, including tubes, flumes, and multi-slides, as well as some extremely quick water rides with light effects, are available for you and your loved one to enjoy.
As a safety precaution since it can get chaotic with adults, toddlers under 1.1 meters (3 ft 7in) in height are not allowed to use the slides or enter the stairway of the above slides.
We certainly like that this waterpark offers swimming lessons for kids between the ages of 8 and 12.

3. Dizzy Dens
If you’re looking for things to do in Donegal this weekend, be sure to visit one of the best indoor playgrounds for kids in the northwest at Bundoran, County Donegal.
Here at Dizzy’s Den, it has a three-lane wave slide, a 30-meter basketball and football court, a super-fast speed slide, and a play area with padded slides for children under 4, just a few of the amenities available.
They also offer a relaxing space where parents can unwind while sipping coffee or eating something hot while watching the kids play in a spotless, secure, and enjoyable environment.
What we do like about this place is that it offers childcare for kids up to 12 years old as well as birthday celebrations. This place is certainly one of the best things to do in Donegal with children!

4. Ballyshannon Leisure Centre
If you plan to spend a fun day at Ballyshannon Beach, only to be greeted by rough waves and heavy rain, then you should consider swimming at Ballyshannon Leisure Centre as it is one of the fun things to do in Donegal County, especially on a rainy day.
It has both a swimming pool, a fitness center, a sauna, a steam room, and an indoor pool with a length of 25 meters (half the size of an Olympic-size swimming pool, which is 50 meters long).

If you’re still near Ballyshannon, be sure to check out Castle Adventure Farm, which is located just 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) from Ballyshannon Beach. Originally, it was known as Wardtown Castle’s farm yard and was supposed to be an open-farm concept.
Eventually, the name changed, and it has gradually transformed and added indoor facilities so that visitors can come here and have things to do in Donegal on a rainy day.
There are so many activities that you can do with your family on Castle Adventure farm, such as rabbit cuddling, goat bottle-feeding, sandpit, tri-cycling, and a whole lot more.

10. Malin Stables
Visit this equestrian and horseback riding center when you’re in Malin, Donegal, as this Donegal-based facility offers horse riding, services for horses, as well as entry to a small animal farm.
The staff in Malin Stables were very helpful and the setting was well-managed. It’s no surprise that the horses here are very friendly. If you’re free, be sure to also try to pet the lambs, bunnies, and a couple of ponies as you wait for turns to ride.
Do note that each rider pays €15 for a half-hour of riding time.
What we like about this place is that they also offer special events like birthday parties and other celebrations. Some day when we have kids in the future, we’ll definitely consider having their birthday party here (if they love horses)!

11. Balor Arts Centre

Try and take a ride on a 4.5 km narrow gauge railway where passengers can ride a diesel or steam train every day and pass through floral meadows, gorgeous forests, willow tunnels, oak rings, and historic trees, even on a rainy day.

14. Moville Pottery
If you have no idea of things to do in Donegal Town when it rains, then perhaps you can try to do some pottery-making, or even paint your own pot, in Moville Pottery, Donegal.
This pottery workshop was founded in 1976 by famous designer and hand thrower Lowry Wasson and is located above the lovely and ancient village of Moville, in the heart of Inishowen, County Donegal.
If you’re artistically inclined, you may pick your own piece from the wide selection of ceramics available and decorate it however you like. Alternatively, you can also buy pottery from talented artisans in northwest Ireland.

16. Lifford Old Courthouse

Then, be sure to explore the Lifford Old Courthouse, Donegal’s historical museum of prisons and courthouse, which offers a unique prison tour and an interactive escape-room game to play called Jailbreak.
Jailbreak is a live escape room game that challenges you to escape a cell before time runs out. This is a unique and fun game to play in a large group, as you have to solve the mystery and work together. Kids as young as 8 years old also get to enjoy this exciting game!
Historically, the Lifford Old Courthouse, also known as the “O’Donnell Clan’s Seat of Power,” was actually built back in the 16th century in Lifford. If you want to know, be sure to check out its Visitors Center where they offer daily guided tours of the prison cells.

17. Donegal Castle
Visit this 14th-century fortress, a prominent landmark overlooking the Eske River, which once served as Red Hugh O’Donnell’s personal residence. Hugh supposedly burned down his castle so that it could never fall into English hands before fleeing for Spain after the Battle of Kinsale.
Unfortunately, Sir Basil Brooke, an English captain, took over the castle in In 1616. Brooke constructed a stately manor home next to the tower as part of a comprehensive upgrade project. The grand chimney piece, which he had made, was adorned with carved fruit and his own heraldic crest to reflect his aristocratic status.
Over the years, the building began to deteriorate, but luckily it was restored to its former beauty again back in the 1990s.

18. Lough Eske Castle
This 17th-century castle-turned hotel is truly one of the most unique places to sleep in Donegal and has plenty of activities you can do on a rainy day in Donegal.
Lough Eske Castle was originally constructed in 1861 and is currently owned by Pat Doherty of Harcourt Developments (the company responsible for Belfast’s Titanic Quarter), featuring 97 guest rooms and suites, an afternoon tea room, a modern fine-dining bistro, and is only 10 minutes to Donegal Town.

19. Glenveagh Castle
Here’s another great place to explore Donegal on a drizzly day (especially for castle-lover)
Built between the years 1867 and 1873, Glenveagh Castle is a fortified palace from the victorian era located between the romantic Irish highland hideaway.
What we do like about this stunning castle is that it has a number of nearby hiking trails that will reward you with breathtaking vantage points. So, once the rain has stopped, be sure to bring along your hiking boots when visiting this place.

20. Doe Castle
Explore the Doe castle (or Caisleán na dTuath) which is roughly 1.6km (1 mile) off the Carrigart, it was formerly home to the MacSweeney Clan (a clan of professional fighters from Scotland, also known as the Gallowglasses) for over 200 years.
It’s reported that the MacSweeneys also gave shelter to survivors of the 1588 Spanish Armada and fought together with young Red Hugh O’Donnell at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. This fortress has also witnessed significant alterations in the stormy 17th century, surviving assault and cannon fire over the years of fighting.
In 1934, Doe Castle is recognized to be under the protection of the Office of Public Works, with considerable restoration work in the late 1990s.
We do recommend that you check online before visiting, as some locals have highlighted that this quaint, historical castle may be closed at times.

21. St.Eunan’s Cathedral
St Eunan’s Cathedral, or the Cathedral of St Eunan, is one of the most stunning Irish cathedrals to explore.
Built between 1890 and 1900 at Letterkenny, this lovely cathedral has some of the best views overlooking the city of Letterkenny with plenty of parking space.
It’s worth the trip to hike up the hill to see this stunning church and pray indoors when the weather gets cloudy and wet.

22. St. Connell’s Museum and Heritage Centre
If you’re looking for a new indoor attraction to explore in Donegal, be sure to check out the St. Connell’s Museum and Heritage Centre, which has local items and historical information about the Great Famine, Brian Friel (one of Ireland’s most famous playwrights), and Patrick McGill (a famous Irish poet).

Located in Letterkenny, the Donegal County Museum is surrounded by beautiful medieval stones (if you love geography, you’ll be able to study the evolution of Donegal from prehistoric times to the current day).
Visit here as you will be greeted by an expanding collection of more than 8,000 artifacts from illuminating historical eras. (from geology, archaeology, flora,animals, and many more)

25. Inishowen Maritime Museum
If your kids are massive fans of maritime history, be sure to bring them to this fantastic Inishowen’s maritime museum that has a full-dome planetarium with exhibits on marine life, astronomy, and more.
Some of the exhibits include a wide range of maritime topics, from shipwrecks to traditional boatbuilding to fishing to emigration to sea conflicts in World Wars I & II to coast guards to master mariners to basking sharks.
In addition to the museum’s tea room (yes, you can enjoy your tea here!), gift store, and parking lots, visitors may also get to enjoy a variety of nautically-themed souvenirs and a fishing equipment shop.

Donegal Craft Village was founded in 1985 and is located just outside of Donegal Town in County Donegal. This is one of the best places to get a memorable token of Donegal for your loved one before returning back home.
There are 6 separate craft and art stores at the Donegal Craft Village, which are neatly arranged around a courtyard. You can also visit their workshops and galleries to see glasswork, handwoven fabrics, paintings, jewelry, prints, and handcrafted felted art.

27. Fanad Head Lighthouse
Last but certainly not least, you cannot say you have discovered north Donegal without visiting the Fanad Head Lighthouse, which is located near Lough Swilly and first operated back in 1817.
If you’re lucky, you may have the chance to meet some of the lightkeepers who have lived at Fanad and hear about their naval tales; learn about the history of this Gaeltacht location (a specific region where locals speak gaeilge: the Irish language), and explore the cutting-edge equipment that monitors the coastline today on a guided tour.
To reach the top of the lighthouse, you have to endure climbing up 76 stone stairs before you’ll be rewarded by its breathtaking view of the Northern Irish coastline.
Once you’re done, be sure to take a stroll around the lighthouse and listen to the crashing waves.
