The views of the lakes and surrounding landscape from the water are stunning. 

From Glendalough Lake in Wicklow to the Killarney Lakes Ireland is full of beautiful lakes to visit but the Lakes of Killarney are hard to beat!

Ger and I have been to Killarney a few times before so we’ve been around the lakes a lot but this was our first time out on the water. 

Side note – We began our passion for Kayaking in Malaysia! It bucketed it down with rain but we had such a hoot!

We still can’t believe that kayaking in Killarney isn’t at the top of everyone’s list of things to do in Killarney.

Wild N Happy Travel is an adventure travel company that offers guided tours throughout Ireland, Scotland and Morrocco!

Some of the tours they offer in Ireland include kayaking in Killarney National Park, Dingle and Ring of Kerry day tours and Galway and Connemara tours.

When Ger and I were looking for kayaking tours or guided canoe trips Killarney was the first place we thought of.

The Lakes in Killarney National Park are stunning and we’ve always wanted to go out on the water there.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for a Killarney kayak rental, you’re out of luck.

You would need to buy your own kayak and gear and then go through the process of getting a permit to kayak in Killarney…. That sounds like a lot of effort, right?

Or you could do what we did and go on the most amazing kayaking tour in Killarney which provides a kayak and everything you need!

Ger and I chose this Killarney Kayaking Tour, which took us from Ross Castle, out into Lough Leane, onto Inishfallen Island and back to Ross Castle.

It was spectacular!

Meet The Instructor

We met our instructor, Mick, at the Ross Castle lower car park at 12:45 for our session at 1 pm.

You have to arrive 15 minutes before your session, so you have enough time to get changed and get your gear ready.

Learn How To Kayak Properly

Mick had already set up our kayaks by the water beside Ross Castle so we were all set to head on to the water at 1 pm.

He explained how to get in and out of the kayak properly, how to hold the paddle correctly, and how to paddle and steer the kayak.

We also had to decide who would be the captain and sit at the back of our two-person kayak.

I nominated Ger because if he can drive on these crazy Irish country roads, he can definitely steer our little kayak! (I am also a bit lazy ha!)

Next, we had to put the theory into practice and try not to capsize!

Kayak To Inishfallen Island

Next thing we were on our way to Inishfallen Island

Mick told us some really interesting facts about the history and geology of the area as we paddled towards the Island. 

• Millions of years ago, this area was all desert and that’s why the mountains have an orange/red colour. 
• The Lakes of Killarney were carved out by a huge glacier.
• Muckross Lake is the deepest lake in Ireland, reaching 75 metres in parts!

Guided Tour Around The Island

We arrived at Inishfallen Island and Mick gave us a tour around the island and the different buildings of the abbey.

He spoke about the architecture of the abbey, the different buildings, and the carvings in the stone.

Mick explained that most abbeys and churches have yew trees planted around them.

After we had explored the abbey, Mick brought us to meet the deer that live on the island!

The does can be seen grazing together as a herd while the young stags fight over them.

We were lucky enough to arrive during the rucking season and got to see the alpha stag of the island!

After seeing the deer it was time to get back out on the water. Mick explained more about the area as we paddled back to Ross Castle.

There are a number of little islands dotted among the Lakes of Killarney.

For example, Mouse Island is a little piece of land that deer take a break on as they swim between Inishfallen Island and the mainland. 

Crocodile Island is another tiny island that got its name due to the currents of the lake eroding its soft, porous limestone into jagged edges like crocs teeth!

We also got to see Library Point; some say it got its name because the stone looks a bit like books. 

Others say there is a library at the bottom of the lake… Ger and I decided to stay dry in our kayak so we can’t confirm which theory is true!

We also got an amazing view of Ross Castle from the water, something we hadn’t seen before!

Although Killarney is famous for its beautiful landscape, the tourist town still has a lot to offer, even on rainy days.

Ger and I were disappointed when our Carrauntoohil hike was canceled due to bad weather (this is the highest mountain in Ireland so you need good weather on your side!), but we found so many cool indoor activities to do in Killarney instead. 

As you can see, we resembled wet rodents, so we decided to find all best indoor activities Killarney has to offer that didn’t involve us getting rained on all day.

1. Visit The Taproom At Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company

The Taproom is a restaurant and bar located on Muckross Road in Killarney. 

They offer delicious pizzas and locally made beers. You can try out a selection of Killarney craft beers or batch brews by ordering their Beer Flight.

This is a really unique way to experience the products of Killarney brewing and distilling.

You can either simply visit the Taproom for food and drinks or go on a jaunting car tour around Killarney first and finish up the tour with a pizza and a drink at the Taproom.

2. Check Out St. Mary’s Cathedral

St. Mary’s Cathedral is one of Killarney’s most stunning sites and definitely its most impressive piece of architecture. 

Construction of the Cathedral began in 1855 but stopped several times and was finally completed in 1907.

The Cathedral is located at the end of New Street in Killarney, right beside the National Park.

The interior of the Cathedral is just as impressive as the exterior, and it is a great place to visit if the rain is stopping you from exploring the great outdoors of Killarney.

If the weather is good, you can park at the Cathedral and walk across the road to the National Park. 

There are a lot of nice walking trails you can embark on from here.

My favourite is the circular walk!

It is a short walk but it offers stunning views of the Lakes of Killarney and the surrounding mountains. 

You are also very likely to see some of the local deer roaming around this area too.

3. Explore Killarney House

Killarney House and Gardens is another spectacular site on the doorstep of Killarney town. 

The House and Gardens offer a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of town.

The beautiful gardens stretch away from Killarney House down to the rest of the National Park.

 This is another great location to start your adventure around the many walking trails of the National Park.

4. Try Out Some Irish Whiskey

Try out the whiskey-tasting boards at the Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder with this Irish Whiskey Experience.

The Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder is located in the heart of Killarney town. 

This is a great way to experience different types of whiskey and learn about the process of whiskey distilling.

5. Go To A Concert At The INEC

Another great way to spend an evening indoors is to go to a concert!

Why not go to one of the many music, dance or comedy shows held at Ireland’s largest multipurpose events venue?

The INEC Arena hosts world-class concerts and events all year round.

It has a large capacity and regularly hosts national and international acts.

Some of the most notable acts that have performed here are Riverdance, Niall Horan, Tom Jones and Snow Patrol.

6. Shop Till You Drop!

The Killarney Outlet Centre is the shopping centre of Killarney. There are many other shops located along the main streets in town but the Outlet Centre has many of the most popular shops altogether in one location.

It is a great place to go shopping, chill out or simply wander around on a rainy day.

 The Outlet Centre has some popular shops such as JD Sports and DV8.

Also, the bus station is located at the Outlet Centre and the train station is right next door so it’s a great place to pass the time while waiting for your bus or train.

7. Make Your Way Out Of An Escape Room

Escape Killarney was the first ever live escape room game in Kerry. 

They host groups of 2 to 12 people. You have to solve puzzles, riddles and cyphers, find clues and figure out how to escape.

This is one of the most fun activities in Killarney. It is suitable for over 13s and can host parties, stags and hens.

8. Learn How To Cook Delicious Irish Cuisine!

Just Cooking is a small cookery school that provides an exciting and educational day out. 

They offer a number of demonstrations and hands-on classes where you can learn how to cook fish, modern Irish cuisine, barbeque and baking.

This is one of the most interesting Killarney indoor activities. It is a great way to learn more about cooking and an interesting way to spend an evening!

9. Relax At The Spa

The Muckross Park Hotel is a 5-star hotel located in Killarney National Park.

One of the most luxurious ways to enjoy a rainy day in Killarney is by relaxing at the spa at the Muckross Park Hotel.

10. Watch A Movie At Cinema Killarney

Going to the cinema is without doubt one of the most popular indoor activities in Killarney. There are two cinemas to choose from (Cinema Killarney and Killarney Omniplex) so you are spoiled for choice!

Ger and I love going to the cinema, especially when it’s raining, because we try to make the most of the outdoors when it’s dry!

And cinema popcorn is so much nicer than the microwave popcorn we make at home.

Also, if you’re looking for kids activities in Killarney, going to the cinema is a great way to spend time together.

11. Dance To Traditional Irish Music At Buckley’s Bar

Located at The Arbutus Hotel, Buckley’s Traditional Bar is one of the best places to experience Irish ‘trad’ music in Killarney.

Killarney has so many great bars and restaurants and live music by local musicians can be heard almost every night of the week.

If you’re looking for traditional Irish music, then Buckley’s Traditional Bar is the place to be!

12. Go For A Luxurious Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea is another luxurious option for a rainy day in Killarney. Many of the hotels offer afternoon tea.

Ger and I went for afternoon tea in the Brehon. It is a beautiful hotel on Muckross Road, beside the INEC.

It was the most amazing setting for afternoon tea with open fires and a pianist playing in the background.

13. Visit Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farms

Muckross House is a stunning building located within Killarney National Park. The house and gardens are located on the edge of Muckross Lake.

You can tour Muckross House and see its beautiful interior design and furnishings.

The Traditional Farms also offer the opportunity to see what rural life and farming were like in Killarney in the past.

Check Out The Kerry County Museum

The Romantic Glamping Suites are the perfect accommodation if you want luxury and comfort while also getting to cook outdoors like traditional camping!

2. Luxury Lodges

The Luxury Lodges has a self-catering kitchen with a hob, Nespresso machine, and all the utensils you would need.

There is also a sheltered gas BBQ outside the lodge if you want to have a more traditional camping food experience.

Each Luxury Lodge has king-size beds, central heating throughout and solid wood flooring.

The Luxury Lodge has a private en-suite bathroom with a wetroom-style shower!

The Lodge patios are also heated, providing the perfect spot to chill out.

3. Cabin At The Grove

The Cabin is the most unique glamping accommodation Ger and I have ever stayed at. 

If you’re glamping in Kerry, I don’t think there are many options as luxurious as the Cabin at the Grove. 

The Cabin is beautiful inside and out, the location is peaceful and everything you could need is right inside the cabin!

One thing Ger and I noticed when we arrived was the Cabin is actually much more spacious than it looks in the photos.

The open-plan design provides plenty of room around the bed and kitchen area, and there’s plenty of space in the bathroom too!

The location of the Cabin is slightly further away from the Romantic Suites and Luxury Lodges, and closer to the river. 

This provides more seclusion and a more tranquil environment on the lower meadow.

The Cabin has an open-plan design, which provides plenty of space and offers amazing views out to the meadow. It has a king-sized bed, kitchen, and en-suite bathroom.

The bed is large and comfortable, and you get to wake up to this amazing view out to the meadow!

The kitchen is equipped with a hob, toaster, Nespresso machine and everything you would need to cook up a storm!

The en-suite has a rainforest-style shower head and heated towel rail.

The cabin also has a private decked patio; this is the perfect spot to chill out and drink your coffee in the morning or star gaze at night

Ger and I decided to treat ourselves and added on a bottle of Prosecco. (This cost €14.99)

We had an amazing stay at this cosy Cabin at the Grove. It was so warm and sheltered and situated in the most idyllic location. 

Staying in the Cabin at the Grove is one of the coolest things to do in Killarney for couples.

Note: The Cabin does not have an outdoor BBQ or WiFi (but there is good 4G coverage).

1. Priory Glamping Pods Killarney

Location:

The Priory Killarney Ireland is located on Muckross Road. It is close to the INEC, Killarney Racecourse and the Ross Golf Course.

It is a 10-minute walk from the town centre and a 5-minute walk from the INEC.

There is also convenient access to Killarney National Park nearby.

Amenities:

The Priory Killarney has multiple glamping pods that feature a private garden, free parking and outdoor seating.

Each pod has a fully equipped kitchenette, a sofa and dining area, and a private bathroom with a shower and hairdryer.

Price:

Each glamping pod costs between €130 and €140 per night, depending on when you stay.

2. Farmyard Lane Glamping

Location:

Farmyard Lane Glamping is located in Beaufort, just outside Killarney town. The Glamping Pods are situated in an apple orchard on a working farm.

The Pods offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Farmyard Lane Glamping is just 5 km from the Gap of Dunloe.

Amenities:

Farmyard Lane Glamping Pods are equipped with a double bed, sofa bed (each pod can accommodate up to four people), kitchenette, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower.

The Pods are also filled with locally sourced products like cosy throws from Kerry Woolen Mills along with a breakfast basket which includes eggs and honey from the farm!

Price:

Each glamping pod costs between €133 and €213 per night depending on when you stay.

3. Dromquinna Manor

Location:

Dromquinna Manor Glamping is located on the grounds of the Dromquinna Manor Hotel waterside estate in Kenmare.

The views around this area are spectacular and each glamping tent is situated to provide the best views and the most privacy available.

The tents are pitched on the shores of Kenmare Bay and offer the most luxurious glamping experience.

Amenities:

The tents are 4 metres x 4 metres inside and have 2 metre-high walls. 

The windows have draw-back curtains and insect nets. You can open the double doors to embrace the views.

There are also family tents which have a second bedroom with two single beds.

Each tent has a deck with furniture where you can relax and take in the views.

Dromquinna Glamping is more suited to the warmer summer months. The tents are not permanent structures so they are removed for the winter. The tents are not heated but hot water bottles are provided to keep the chill at bay.

The tents are close to the Courtyard where there are BBQ facilities, Kitchen facilities, an open fireplace, ladies’ and gents’ toilets and shower facilities. There is also a games room and a playground.

A breakfast hamper is delivered to the tent each morning with tea, coffee, juice, yoghurt and croissants.

Price:

The Double Glamping Tents cost between €195 and €230 per night while the Family Tents cost between €220 and €260 per night.

4. Dingle Way Glamping

Location:

Possibly the most unique glamping Kerry has to offer. Dingle Way Glamping is located in Annascaul in the heart of the Dingle Peninsula. 

It is just 6 km from the world-famous Inch Beach, 16 km from Dingle and 48 km from Killarney.

The accommodation offers stunning mountain and river views.

Amenities:

There are three different accommodation types available;

Shepherds Hut

There are two shepherd’s huts and they have a kitchenette and also an outdoor communal cooking area. 

There is a double bed and a pull-out camp bed so each hut can accommodate two adults and one child.

The huts also have a private bathroom with a shower and toilet.

Train Carriage

The Train Carriage was inspired by the old Dingle Steam Train. It is a 26-foot x 9-foot self-contained unit with a fully equipped kitchen and private en-suite bathroom with a shower.

The Train Carriage has a double bed and a bunk bed in the same room and can accommodate two adults and two children.

Glamping Pod

The Glamping Pod has a double bed, en-suite bathroom with a shower and a kitchenette.

The Glamping Pod can accommodate two people.

5. Oaklane Glamping Cabins

Location:

Oaklane Glamping Cabins are located in Kenmare. The glamorous Glamping Cabin is situated in a beautiful hillside location overlooking Kenmare Bay.

The glamping site is on a sheep farm on the outskirts of Kenmare.

 It is just a 25-minute walk from the Cabin to the town!

This cabin is the perfect place to watch the sunset over Kenmare Bay or the sunrise overlooking Kenmare Town and the MacGillycuddys Reeks mountain range.

Amenities:

The cabins are equipped with a kitchenette with a toaster, kettle, fridge, and a coffee machine. 

Each Cabin also has an en-suite bathroom with a shower and an outdoor seating area with a fire pit.

Ger and I loved trying out all the delicious food after exploring Killarney and the local attractions. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so was keen to see what sweet treats an afternoon tea in Killarney would offer.

Being half English I am well versed with afternoon tea but I heard an afternoon tea in Killarney would make English food pale in comparison! (my taste buds got very excited O_O)

About Afternoon Tea in Killarney 

Just in case you are curious or are new to this concept of afternoon tea…

Afternoon Tea is a tradition that originated in England when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedfordshire couldn’t wait for dinner to be served at 7 pm and ordered her servants to bring her tea and light food in the afternoon when she got peckish (note – hungry like bird).

It became a tradition when she started inviting other aristocrats for afternoon tea and even introduced the concept to Queen Victoria.

An Irish afternoon tea typically consists of a range of teas or coffees to choose from along with a three-tiered tray of sandwiches and sweet treats.

The first layer consists of sandwiches, the second layer typically has a scone or cake, and the third layer has a few little desserts!

As a child, I used to host tea parties pouring out imaginary cups of tea for my family. 

Now I get to drag Ger along to fancy hotels where we can enjoy real cups of tea and delicious treats.

Ger says he’s not interested in acting like the Queen of England but I know the Irishman can’t resist a good cup of tea and freshly baked scones!

How To Dress For Afternoon Tea

Many hotels in Killarney offer afternoon tea and are quite easygoing when it comes to dress codes, but ‘smart casual’ is the best way to dress for afternoon tea.

For men, this would include smart trousers and shoes with a shirt. For women, this would include a classic dress style such as a midi or knee-length dress.

Ger and I would love to have plopped down beside the open fire with our hiking gear on, but dressing up and acting like royalty really does add to the experience of afternoon tea.

Best Afternoon Tea Killarney

1. The Brehon

The Brehon is a luxury hotel located on Muckross Road in Killarney. The hotel offers luxurious rooms, amazing dining experiences and a spa. We also heard that the Brehon has the best afternoon tea in Killarney!

The Brehon is named after the old Irish Brehon Laws and one of the laws was that you must show hospitality to anyone who steps through your door.

If you’re looking for an amazing afternoon tea Brehon Hotel Killarney is hard to beat. We were blown away by the experience from the moment we walked into the lobby.

When you book afternoon tea in the Brehon, you can choose between sitting in the lobby with the open fire or the mezzanine with views of Killarney National Park.

We chose to stay in the lobby as the atmosphere with the open fires and live piano music was amazing.

We got to warm up by the open fire in the lobby as we waited for our reservation time to come around.

As we sipped on our tea and drooled over the menu, the most amazing trays of food appeared.

The hummus and red pepper sandwiches were my favourite!

Ger couldn’t get over how fresh the scones were. He even asked for extra after we finished the last dessert tray!

The food was amazing and the staff were great, especially when we asked for more tea (and scones!).

If you want to experience afternoon tea the Brehon Killarney is a great place to try it.

2. Killarney Royal Hotel

The Killarney Royal Hotel is a 4-star luxury hotel in the heart of Killarney. It is within walking distance of the bus station, train station and many of the best bars and restaurants.

It is a family-run hotel that provides great service and amazing food.

The Muckross Park Hotel and Spa is a 5-star hotel in Muckross just 4km from the town centre.

If you’re looking for the popular afternoon tea Malton Hotel Killarney offers, it might be hard to find. The Malton was originally called The Great Southern Hotel, built in 1854 by the Great Southern and Western Railway Company. 

The name changed to The Malton in 2009 but the old name was reinstated in 2018.

The name may have changed but the deluxe Victorian hotel still provides one of the fanciest afternoon tea experiences in Killarney! 

It is situated right next to the train station and ‘The Outlet Centre’, Killarneys shopping centre.

This 5-star hotel is a great location to immerse yourself in luxury, afternoon tea is even served in a Victorian Drawing Room.

This 5-star hotel and spa is in the perfect location to unwind, admire the surrounding landscape and experience an amazing Killarney afternoon tea.

Ger and I had dinner in the Brasserie one night, the food and service was amazing.

Unfortunately, at the Hotel Europe Killarney afternoon tea is not on the menu. 

While they don’t provide an official Afternoon Tea you could order tea, snacks and sweet treats from the Lounge to create your very own Afternoon Tea.

You could even order champagne or prosecco from the bar to make it a Sparkling Afternoon Tea!

Despite not offering afternoon tea Europe Hotel Killarney had to be included on our list as it still provides one of the top luxury experiences in Kerry.

The Cahernane House Hotel is situated on its own private estate on the edge of Killarney National Park. 

The Hotel offers amazing views of the gardens and surrounding woodlands. It is a great location to relax and unwind.

Drive Around The Ring Of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is one of the most popular driving routes in Ireland for good reason!

We were blown away by the beautiful scenery around Kerry.

The ring takes you through towns such as Killarney and Kenmare, over mountain passes, through valleys and along Kerry’s Atlantic coastline. 

The views along this route are hard to beat. Ger and I have travelled around the Ring of Kerry a few times and we will probably do it again!

About Lakes In Killarney

There are three main lakes in Killarney, Lough Leane (a.k.a Lower Lake), Muckross Lakes (a.k.a Middle Lake) and the Upper Lake. 

The three main lakes are known collectively as ‘The Lakes of Killarney’.

There are other lakes dotted around Killarney which add to the beauty of the landscape. There are many hikes and walking trails that go around these lakes. 

The lakes in Killarney are a key part of the Killarney National Park. The lakes and woodlands are surrounded by the MacGillycuddys Reeks Mountain Range. 

Torc Mountain, Carrauntouhill and Purple Mountain all offer great hiking trails and stunning views of the lakes in Killarney.

Many people ask can you swim in Killarney lake, and the answer is yes but it’s not recommended. (More on this later…)

The Main Lakes Of Killarney

1.Lough Leane

Lough Leane, also known as the Lower Lake, is the largest lake of Killarney.  The River Laune flows from Lough Leane out into Dingle Bay. 

It is about 19 square kilometres in size making it the largest body of fresh water in the area. 

On Lough Leane or Lower Lake Killarney fishing is very popular. If you don’t want to catch a fish yourself you can enjoy a tasty salmon at Kitty O’Sé’s Restaurant instead!

Inishfallen Island is an island in Lough Leane and is home to the ruins of the Inishfallen Abbey.

Another notable site on Lough Leane is Ross Castle. Built in the late 15th Century, Ross Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Killarney.

You can even take a boat tour out onto this Killarney lake from Ross Castle to Inishfallen Island!

Muckross Lake

Muckross Lake, also known as the Middle Lake or Torc Lake, is just south of Lough Leane. There is a paved hiking trail of about 10 kilometres circling the lake.

Muckross Lake is Ireland’s deepest lake, reaching depths of 75 meters in parts.

In 2003, sonar was used to determine fish populations in the Lakes of Killarney. During these scans, a large solid object was recorded in the water.

This gave rise to the story of ‘Muckie’ the lake monster!

Some people say it’s just a myth but who knows what secrets the deepest lake in Ireland holds?

Upper Lake

The Upper Lake is the smallest of the three Lakes of Killarney located to the southwest of Muckross Lake (the Middle Lake). The Upper Lake is about 16 km from Killarney.

There are spectacular views of the MacGillycuddys Reeks Mountain Range and the surrounding greenery from the Upper Lake.

Devil’s Punchbowl

The Devil’s Punchbowl is a lake you will come across if you decide to take on Mangerton Mountain in Killarney National Park. 

The mountain is over 830 metres tall and offers a panoramic view across Killarney National Park and the Lakes of Killarney.

The Devil’s Punchbowl is a glacial lake carved into Mangerton Mountain. The water’s dark colour contrasts starkly with the surrounding greenery.

Lough Guitane

Lough Guitane is a freshwater lake just outside Killarney. The lake is situated beside Crohane Mountain.

This is a beautiful place to explore and offers a moderate 4-hour hike if you want a better view of Lough Guitane and the surrounding landscape.

Black Lake

The Black Lake is situated in the Gap of Dunloe, a beautiful valley between the MacGillycuddys Reeks and Purple Mountain carved out by a glacier over 20,000 years ago.

The Gap of Dunloe is a stunning area with pristine lakes, green fields and tall peaks. You can take boat tours, jaunting car tours or even walk around the area. 

You can even drive the Gap of Dunloe if you are confident on narrow, windy roads!

The Black Lake is one of the five lakes in the Gap of Dunloe. Although these lakes are much smaller than the Lakes of Killarney, they are well worth visiting.

Things To Do Near Lakes In Killarney

Killarney National Park

You could spend forever exploring everything there is to see in Killarney National Park.

There are countless walks and trails through woods and around lakes. Not to mention the beautiful mountains you can hike.

Not many people know this but there are caves in Killarney National Park, dotted around different places but they aren’t signposted so you will have to explore and find them for yourself!

Ger and I have come back to Killarney National Park so many times now and we still find something new and exciting every time we visit!

Gap Of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Ireland. The valley carved out by a glacier can be explored by car, bike, on foot or on a guided tour.

We rented a car for our trip to Killarney to give us the most flexibility and freedom. Ger decided he would drive up the Gap of Dunloe as he’s used to the narrow country roads in Ireland!

You can take a boat tour or even hop on a jaunting car if you also want some extra information about the area from a local tour guide.

Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farms

Muckross House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Killarney.

Muckross House and Gardens offers amazing walking trails around the gardens and along the lake shore.

You can even check out the traditional farms to see what farm life was like in Kerry in the past. 

You can also walk to the secluded, hidden gem, Rosie’s Beach from Muckross House!

Ross Castle

Ross Castle was built in the late 15th Century by the O’Donoghue Clan. Ross Castle was the last place in Munster to hold out against the Cromwellian Invasion of Ireland.

Ross Castle has a tower house and keep and is perched on the edge of Lough Leane.

We got to see the sunset from Ross Castle! 

Ladies View

Ladies View is an amazing viewing point along the Ring of Kerry just outside Killarney town. The famous viewpoint got its name when Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting admired the view during the Queen’s visit to Killarney in 1861.

It’s easy to see why it’s one of the most photographed places in Killarney.

A lot of cafes in Killarney have amazing views but the view from the rooftop at the Ladies View Cafe is unbeatable.

Meeting Of The Waters

The Meeting of the Waters is situated where the Upper Lake, Muckross Lake, and Lough Leane come together. You can reach this spectacular spot by walking or by bicycle.

It is a 5km walk from Muckross House to the Meeting of The Waters.

In this area, you can also find the Old Weir Bridge and the hunting lodge, Dinis Cottage, which overlooks Muckross Lake.

Torc Waterfall

Torc Waterfall is very popular and can get quite busy as it is so close to the town.

The waterfall is fed from the Devil’s Punchbowl, through the Owengarrif River and eventually leads into Muckross Lake.

Torc Waterfall is just 7km from Killarney town. There is plenty of parking close to the waterfall and many hiking trails start from here.

O’Sullivans Cascade

O’Sullivans Cascade is a stunning waterfall that you can visit in Tomies Wood.

There is a 6km looped hike up Tomies Mountain. It takes about two hours to finish the loop.

Most people do the loop counter-clockwise, heading up the hill to the right at the fork. You will reach the steps to O’Sullivans Cascade after about 5km.

Ger and I had plenty of walking done around Killarney National Park so we decided to skip the hike at Tomies and just visit the waterfall.

We took the route left at the fork and reached the waterfall after about 1 km!

How Far Is Killarney From The Sea?

Kerry, the county with the most Blue Flag beaches in Ireland, has so many beautiful beaches along its Atlantic Coastline that the hidden gems in Killarney are often overlooked.

Ger and I would never have found the beaches in Killarney without information from the locals! (More on this later… )

In this blog post, we will discuss the closest beaches to Killarney, our favourites and the beaches that only the locals know about.

If you’re wondering where is the nearest beach to Killarney, Dundag Beach is just a 10-minute drive from the town!

It is also the most popular Killarney lake beach. It is a man-made beach just minutes from Muckross House in Killarney National Park.

Muckross House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Killarney.

There are stunning walking trails around the house and gardens and even along the lake shore. You can also learn about the history of rural Ireland at the Muckross Traditional Farms.

This sandy beach on the shore of Muckross Lake is popular with tourists and locals alike.

Many people stumble across this beach when visiting Muckross House as it is so close and can be seen from the main path around the lake.

This is a great place to chill out on a sunny day in Killarney when you don’t want to face the long drive to the closest coastal beach in Kerry.

There are two ways to get to Dundag Beach:

1. Muckross House Car Park

You walk past Muckross House towards the lake and turn left along the main path. Follow this path past the boat house and you will see the entrance to Dundag Beach on your right.

2. Park Near The Boat House

As you drive through the Muckross House main entrance, you take the first left and drive as far as this parking area.

You can park here and walk to the beach. Go past the barrier and through this gate.

Walk down the hill and turn left when you see the main path. Follow this path until you see this sign for Torc Waterfall.

The entrance to Dundag Beach is directly across from it.

2. Rosie’s Beach

Rosie’s Beach is also on the shore of Muckross Lake but many locals don’t even know about this secluded spot!

If you’re looking for some cool things to do around Killarney, going on an adventure to a secret beach is one of the coolest things I could think of!

Ger and I are lucky to have a friend from the area that we met when we played gaelic football in Barcelona. He knows about all the best beaches and cool spots in Kerry and he told us how to get to this secret beach in Killarney.

We were amazed that this hidden gem isn’t more well known!

If you’re wondering is Killarney worth visiting, our adventure to Rosie’s Beach alone made it worth the trip!

This is how you get to Rosie’s Beach:

It takes about 30 minutes to walk from the Muckross House car park to Rosie’s Beach.

From the car park, head towards Muckross House. When you reach the main door head right along the main path and walk past the jaunting cars.

On a side note, if you’re wondering what is Killarney famous for… these jaunting cars are one of the main reasons. 

You can even get a tour around Killarney National Park on a jaunting car if you want to see what all the fuss is about!

Now back to the directions!

Keep walking along the path past the jaunting cars.

Turn left at this crossroads, following the sign towards Dinis Cottage and the Meeting Of The Waters.

You will come to a fork in the road, and continue left along the main path.

Continue along the path through the stone wall (don’t go up the steps).

Eventually, you will come to this area, and the pathway to the beach is on the left directly across from the bench.

Don’t worry, the path gets clearer once you pass the tree line!

You just need to follow the dirt trail through the woods for about 10 minutes.

You will start to see the lake through the trees as you reach the end of the trail.

You have arrived at Rosie’s Beach!

Beaches Near Killarney

3. Dooks Beach

If you’re wondering what is the nearest beach to Killarney, Dooks Beach is the closest coastal beach to Killarney.

It is 39 minutes away from Killarney town. Dooks Beach often gets overlooked for the more popular Inch Beach and Rossbeigh Beach.

The easiest way to get to all the beaches near Killarney is by driving. We rented a car as it gave us flexibility and freedom.

 We recommend DiscoverCars (it’s super affordable and reliable!).

There is no official car park at Dooks Beach so parking spaces by the beach are very limited. If you do get a space then you will get to experience a very secluded sandy beach just minutes from the village of Glenbeigh.

As this beach is secluded and there is no lifeguard service here we would not recommend swimming here.

4. Inch Beach

Inch Beach is a 40-minute drive from Killarney and one of the most popular beaches in Kerry. Inch is a beautiful sand spit that stretches 5km out into Dingle Bay.

Inch has plenty of parking with an official car park beside the beach but most people park on the beach itself. 

Just make sure to move your car before the tide comes in! 

When Ger and I visited we even saw a local farmer towing cars off the beach after they got stuck. Our friend said this happens a lot… 

Moral of the story; move your car before the farmer has to do it for you!

Inch Beach is great for surfing, kayaking, swimming, walking and even fishing. 

It is a Blue Flag Beach so there are lifeguards on duty during the summer. Just make sure to stay within the designated swimming area in front of the lifeguards.

5. Rossbeigh Beach

Rossbeigh Beach is 45 minutes from Killarney. It is located just past the village of Glenbeigh.

Rossbeigh, just like Inch, also extends out into Dingle Bay but on the opposite side. You can even see Rossbeigh from Inch! 

Rossbeigh Mountain provides some shelter at the beach making it a great place to chill out and go for a swim. 

Rossbeigh Beach is a great location for walking, horse-trekking and watersports. There is even a playground right next to the beach.

6. Banna Strand

Banna Strand is about 47 minutes drive from Killarney. The beach stretches along 10km with large sand dunes

Banna Strand also has some historical significance in the battle for Irish freedom. Roger Casement, a diplomat and later an Irish Nationalist landed at Banna Beach in 1916 in an attempt to provide weapons for the Irish Revolutionaries.

Hence, the memorial to him is situated at Banna Beach.

Banna Beach is also a  great place for surfing with a number of surf schools in the area.

7. Fenit Beach

Fenit Beach is about 50 minutes from Killarney.

Fenit is a sheltered sandy beach with calm waters making it very popular with swimmers. It is a Blue Flag Beach so there are lifeguards on duty here during the summer.

Fenit is also a great place for other water sports like sailing and kayaking. 

8. Ballybunion Beach

Ballybunion Beach is 60 minutes from Killarney. This beach is actually split in two, the Men’s Beach and the Ladies Beach partitioned by a cliff and the Ballybunion Castle.

While the names actually did signify separate beaches for men and women in the past, this is not the case anymore. The names still remain but you can visit either beach regardless of gender.

With the high cliffs surrounding the beach, Ballybunion Beach is very sheltered and is a great place for sunbathing (if you get lucky with the Irish weather!).

It is also a Blue Flag Beach with lifeguards on duty during the summer making it a great place for swimming and watersports also.

9. Kells Bay Beach

Kells Bay is a beach with a small harbour on the Iveragh Peninsula. It takes about 65 minutes to get there from Killarney.

Kells Bay Beach is sheltered from the strong Atlantic currents providing calm waters which is great for swimmers.

You can also find parts of the Kerry Way trail and the  Kells Bay Gardens in the area.

10. Ventry Beach

Ventry Beach is 75 minutes from Killarney. It is just past the fishing town of Dingle and also one of my favourite beaches in Kerry!

It is a beautiful sandy beach within Ventry Bay. The Bay provides shelter making this a great place to swim.

There is plenty of parking, public toilets, outdoor showers and lifeguards on duty during the summer.

11. Ballinskelligs Beach

Ballinskelligs Beach is an 80-minute drive from Killarney. It is situated in the southwest of the Iveragh Peninsula. This Blue Flag Beach sits in the Ballinskelligs Bay and is very popular with swimmers. 

There are lifeguards on duty here during the summer and even swimming and life saving lessons available in the area.

12. Derrynane Beach

Derrynane Beach is quite a drive from Killarney but it is arguably the most beautiful beach in Kerry. It takes about 90 minutes to get to Derrynane from Killarney. 

There’s free parking but this can fill up fast in the busy summer months. 

Derrynane is a Blue Flag Beach but some areas are not safe to swim in. Look out for the signs and ask the lifeguards if unsure!

13. Coumeenoule Beach

Coumeenoule Beach is located on the western edge of the Dingle Peninsula. It takes about 90 minutes to get to Coumeenoule Beach from Killarney. 

There is a small car park and some picnic tables where you can admire the amazing views of the beautiful sandy beach and the Atlantic coastline. There is a steep walk down to the beach from the car park.

There are very strong currents at this beach so it is NOT SAFE TO SWIM here.

Why You Shouldn’t Swim In The Lakes Of Killarney

Locals don’t normally swim in the Lakes of Killarney for a few different reasons.

The Lakes are quite large and have surprisingly strong currents and there are no lifeguards on duty.

Another reason to stay out of the water is that the lakes sometimes contain Blue-Green Algae, or cyanobacteria.

This is a build-up of algal bacteria in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals.

The water is tested regularly and the Kerry County Council issues warnings for people to avoid entering the water or letting pets in the water.

Blue Flag Beaches

The Blue Flag is an international award for beaches and marinas that meet a high environmental standard and also provide a high standard for cleanliness and safety facilities.

In 2023, County Kerry was awarded the most blue flags of any county in Ireland. 

Irish Beach Weather

Don’t wait around for sunny days to go to the beach in Ireland! You might get lucky and end up at the beach during a heatwave but it’s more likely to be raining when you visit Ireland.

In either case, Irish beaches are beautiful and you should visit them no matter what the weather is like.

Irish beaches are very popular all year round, many people go for walks on the beach or go for a swim even in the Winter! (Cold water isn’t for me so I’m sticking to dry land for now!)

You can enjoy Irish beaches no matter what the weather is like, you just have to come prepared.

We always recommend people to bring a rain jacket (this rain jacket is great!) no matter what time of year they are visiting Ireland.
