Ger and I have strolled and swam (despite the freezing cold water!) at many beaches in Ireland but Fintra beach remains one of our favourites.

Fintra Beach is an amazing sandy beach with pristine water. There is a downhill slope to get to the beach which means getting back to your car will be a bit of a climb, but so worth it ! 

I am going to share all you need to know about this stunning beach including where to park and how to stay safe.

Although this is a Blue Flag beach, with 2 life guards on duty between June and September, it can be dangerous if you go swimming or surfing alone. More on that later!

About Fintra Beach Donegal

If you are looking for nice beaches in Donegal, Fintra Beach is one of the best.

 This Blue Flag Beach is clean, is extremely child friendly as it has a gentle slope into the sea, as well as plenty of rock pools for the older kids to explore

The pristine waters are sheltered from the strong Atlantic winds as it is nestled within the beautiful Fintra Bay. 

Having said that, when I went it was pretty windy so dont forget your windbreaker, you know how irish weather is!

1. Location of Fintra Beach

Fintra Beach is located in Fintra Donegal about 3 km from the town of Killybegs in the south-west of county Donegal.

So 2 to 3 mins from Killybegs or 25 mins from Donegal town

I am pretty bad at directions so I need someone to tell me EXACTLY where to go. (I turn around in a circle and promptly lose my bearings, thats how bad my sense of direction is!)

Anyway, if you are like me, you can find the precise location of Fintra Beach on Google Maps.

2. Where To Park

There is a car park right beside the beach making it very accessible for all visitors.

From the car park, there are a few stone steps leading down to the beach. Ok maybe more than a few! Just be prepared to huff and puff a bit back to the carpark after your beach day out

3. How To Get To The Beach

Getting to Fintra Beach is pretty straightforward. 

You can simply follow the signs for the beach from the town of Killybegs along the R263 road heading West.

There are also public transportation options available such as : 

• The  bus to Killybegs and 
• several taxi services in Killybegs

We rented a car as it gave us flexibility and freedom. We recommend DiscoverCars because they had super great reviews and really looked after us!.

4. Staying Safe at Fintra Beach 

While Fintra is a beautiful beach with soft sand and clear water, safety should always be a priority.

 Fintra is a Blue Flag Beach, meaning there will be lifeguards on duty during the summer months.

It is very important to heed the warnings from the lifeguards and also to stay within the swimming zones in order to stay safe.

Things To Do At Fintra Beach Donegal

1. Go For A Stroll

Take a stroll along the long, sheltered beach which extends about 1 km along Fintra Bay. The beautiful golden sand and clear water provide a peaceful atmosphere to relax and embrace the outdoors.

Fintra Beach is an amazing place to explore any time of day or any time of year. Just make sure to wrap up if you’re visiting the beach during the Winter. 

The best time to visit the beach is in the morning at sunrise. Fintra Bay Donegal offers spectacular views on clear days but the beach is even more stunning in the morning sun.

2. Go For a Dip

Fintra Beach is one of Donegal’s many Blue Flag Beaches. This makes it perfect for taking a dip into the Atlantic Ocean if you can handle the cold. 

As it is a blue flag beach you are guaranteed a clean beach and safety facilities. 

Be sure to follow the guidance from the lifeguards and stay safe when entering the water.

Places To Visit Near Fintra Beach Donegal

1. Assaranca Waterfall

Assaranca Waterfall is a picturesque natural wonder located near the town of Ardara just 1km from Maghera Beach. The waterfall cascades down the cliff into a rock pool below.

The natural beauty of this area attracts many visitors. It is easily accessible as it is a short walk from the roadside.

2. Glengesh Pass

This is a beautiful mountain road that winds through the landscape of Donegal. The hills and mountains surrounding the road make driving through Glengesh Pass a surreal experience.

This is one of the best ways to see the rugged landscape of Donegal while making your way through the countryside.

3. Slieve League

Slieve League is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. It is a must-visit location in Donegal. It is located along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the sea, cliffs, and surrounding landscapes. You can either drive to a viewpoint or you could also go for a hike in this area.

4. Glencolmcille Folk Village

The Glencolmcille Folk Village offers a glimpse into Ireland’s past, it is a living museum that shares the rich cultural heritage of Ireland.

The village includes a number of traditional thatch cottages and other historic buildings.

Narin and Portnoo are villages close to Maghera Beach. They are coastal villages that offer immaculate beaches and spectacular natural beauty.

Narin Beach is an amazing beach perfect for long walks and chilling out. Portnoo provides views of its beautiful coastline, harbour and world-class golf course.

6. Kilclooney Dolmen

This interesting structure known as the Kilclooney Dolmen is a megalithic tomb located near Ardara.

This ancient monument is thousands of years old and is made up of several large stone slabs that form a chamber.

7. Silver Strand Beach

Silver Strand Beach is another beautiful beach along the coastline of Donegal. This beautiful horseshoe-shaped beach is a great place to relax and unwind.

8. Maghera Beach And Caves

Maghera Beach, also known as Ardara Beach, is an amazing coastal area in Donegal.

The natural beauty, stunning landscape and interesting cave systems attract many tourists to the area.

It is not safe to swim at Maghera Beach due to dangerous currents and riptides. Also, the caves are only accessible when the tide is out.

9. The Céilí House Bar

The Ceili House Bar is located in the small town of Ardara close to Maghera Beach and Caves. It is a Traditional Irish Music bar with a great atmosphere and amazing local musicians.

They host sessions each night throughout the summer months starting at 9.30 pm. There are weekend music sessions in the Winter months.

There is also accommodation available at the Ceili House bar. It is a great location to stay in while exploring Donegal if you want to experience rural Ireland and the Atlantic coastline.

10. Sliabh Liag Distillers – The Ardara Distillery

You can explore the Ardara Distillery and learn all about the art of making Irish whiskey in the beautiful town of Ardara.

Ballymastocker Beach is located in the North of county Donegal, so when Ger and I did a road trip to Donegal we made it a priority to swing by this beach ! 

I have to say, although Ger and I have traveled to many beaches in Ireland, this one tops the list. Its one of the most breathtaking beaches we have visited O_O (and I’ve lived in NZ, so that’s really saying something!)

On a good day, the clear waters look emerald. It really is the perfect place to go for a stroll. It’s surrounded by green fields and golden brown sand which remind you of the wonders of the rugged Irish coastline.

About Ballymastocker Beach

Ballymastocker Beach is a stunning sandy beach on the Fanad Peninsula. The views of the beach and the surrounding area will take your breath away. 

This is the perfect place to chill out on the beach or even go for a dip!

1. Location

Ballymastocker Beach is located in Portsalon Ireland. The town of Portsalon is situated on the North-West side of the Fanad Peninsula in County Donegal.

This beautiful beach on the Eastern shore of Lough Swilly overlooks Ballymastocker Bay and is situated to the south of Fanad Head and north of Rathmullan.

2. Where To Park

There is a car park on the southern side of the beach. There are facilities such as toilets and picnic tables here also.

During the summer months the car park can get quite busy so make sure to arrive early to ensure you get a parking space.

3. How To Get To The Beach

The car park is right beside the beach on the southern side so it is just a short walk down to the beach.

You can also walk to the beach from the town of Portsalon which is on the Northern side of the beach.

There are cafes, bars and shops right by the beach in Portsalon.

We rented a car as it gave us flexibility and freedom to explore Donegal and its beautiful beaches. We recommend DiscoverCars.

4. Staying Safe at Ballymastocker Beach

Ballymastocker Beach Donegal is a stunning Blue Flag Beach. This means it is exceptionally clean and you can swim at this beach.

There are lifeguards on duty here between June and September from 12 noon to 6:30 pm.

Despite the presence of lifeguards it is very important to be cautious and ensure you check the swimming conditions before entering the water.

1. Enjoy The View

Ballymastocker Bay Donegal offers one of the most amazing views in the country. 

There is a viewing point along the road to Ballymastocker Beach which provides the most amazing panorama of Ballymastocker Bay, the beautiful beach and the surrounding fields. 

You can reach the Ballymastocker Beach Viewpoint by driving along the R268 road from Rathmullan. You will have amazing views of the bay as you reach the viewpoint.

2. Go For A Stroll

Ballymastocker Beach offers 1.5km of beautiful golden sand. You can take a stroll along the beach any time of day or any time of year. 

Just make sure to wrap up if you’re visiting the beach during the Winter. 

The best time to visit the beach is in the morning at sunrise. The views are spectacular throughout the day but the beach is even more beautiful in the morning sun.

3. Go For a Dip

Sea swimming has become incredibly popular in Ireland despite the cold weather and Ballymastocker Beach is one of the best places to do it.

The Great Pollet Sea Arch is an incredible natural wonder located close to Fanad Head. There is a car park about half a mile from the sea arch.

There is a trail from the car park to the sea arch making this a very accessible natural wonder. It is well worth the visit.

3. Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is an area of natural beauty in the heart of county Donegal.

The park showcases the landscape of Donegal with valleys, lakes, mountains and green fields.

The area is full of different flora and fauna. It is the perfect place for natural enthusiasts and hikers to explore.

4. Glenveagh Castle

Glenveagh Castle is nestled within the Glenveagh National Park.

Aisha used to live in NZ and keeps saying Ireland in the sun makes NZ pale in comparison! But we all know the Irish sun is perpetually shy ha!

Anyway, Tramore Beach is the perfect beach to explore Ireland’s rugged countryside, because there are actually no roads to this amazing beach! 

You have to actually do a bit of legwork for the view, and walk along a marked path to reach the beach 

Which means there are less pesky tourists (like us O_O), causing noise pollution,  taking pics for the gram’ wanting the world to know they #hadaclassweekend #butyoudidnt #lookatme

Gripes with noisy influencers aside, in this guide we will share everything you need to know about this secluded beach including where to park, how to actually reach the beach, and how to stay safe. 

(Yeah, you shouldn’t swim on this beach, no matter how good that instgram shot will be!)

First things first, what do you need to know about Tramore Beach in Donegal?

Tramore Beach is probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Donegal, probably because it is definitely the most secluded, as there are no roads to it! 

I personally feel this seclusion makes Tramore Beach really peaceful. We live in a busy world full of noise, with so many things calling for our attention  

Tramore Beach is the perfect place to have a bit of peace and quiet, sit back and relax and *hopefully* have a digital detox 

1. Location

Tramore Beach is situated on the northern coast of Donegal offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. 

It’s a pretty amazing secluded beach, close to the town of Dunfanaghy. 

The proximity to Dunfanaghy makes Tramore Beach particularly appealing because the little coastal town offers excellent places to eat and drink and also serves as a great base for exploring Donegal. 

You can find the precise location of Tramore Beach on Google Maps.

I found plenty of beachfront accommodation spots that were affordable with excellent hospitality, like this one and this one.

2. Where To Park

As there are no roads to the beach it’s a bit complicated to get to… but don’t worry!

The easiest way to get to the car park is by heading from Dunfanaghy and driving along the road towards Horn Head.

You will cross the long low bridge and then look out for signs for parking. The drive from Dunfanaghy to the car park only takes about 6 minutes.

Here is a link to Google Maps to help you find the location for parking at Tramore Beach. Head towards this location and you will see the signs for the car park. (free parking when we were there)

3. How To Get To The Beach

Once you find the signs along the road and reach the car park the real journey begins. 

You walk through the gate and follow the tree-lined pathway that will take you all the way down to the beach. 

The walk along the trail takes about 30 minutes through trees, hills and fields.

 At this point, you may curse the person who invited you to go on this trip and wonder when it’s going to end (*ahem*, that might have been me ….) and then suddenly …

As you follow the trail the sounds of the sea begin to grow louder and soon enough you are rewarded with stunning views of Tramore Beach. (yahoooo! Time to get the caramel biscuits and hot flask of tea out)

The trail is not suitable for buggies or strollers or anyone with limited mobility

 BUT If your limited mobility is the fact that you are unfit and enjoy scoffing doughnuts all day, that doesn’t count. Well that’s what Ger told me and I disagree -_-

My doughnut eating habits aside, the walk to Tramore Beach is challenging in places, but the views are well worth the effort!

Tip From The Locals: If the weather is clear while you’re in the area, the walk to Tramore Beach is the most amazing place to experience the sunset.

You have our permission just this time to be a pesky tourist and take a cheeky selfie of the sunset and upload some deep quote involving Gandhi. You are welcome.

4. Staying Safe at Tramore Beach

I LOVE me some crystal clear sea water. But you know what I love more? Living, breathing and generally, staying ALIVE.

The clear waters of Tramore Beach can be alluring but it is NOT SAFE to swim here! 

This is because there are vicious riptides and strong currents that will suck you under. EEEP! O_O 

Also as the beach is so secluded, there are no lifeguards on duty here. 

The thought of any of you flailing away trying and failing to get help gives me the heebie jeebies , JUST DON’T SWIM AT TRAMORE BEACH PLEASE! *praying hands emoticon*

5. There Is More Than One Tramore Beach In Ireland

The name Tramore comes from the Irish language ‘Trá mór’ translates to ‘Big beach’. 

As you can imagine, there are a lot of big beaches in Ireland. 

Tramore is also the name of a big coastal town in county Waterford in the south-east of Ireland.

So make sure to specify ‘Tramore Donegal’ in Google Maps so you don’t turn a 10-minute drive into a 6-hour drive to the other side of the country!

I am not pointing any fingers but there were two people in the car that day and only ONE of us realized we were driving the wrong way and it WASN’T GER. #terriblenavigationGer

Other Tips:

1- It gets windy, so pack layers. Like proper ones that won’t make your nipples so cold they become sharp as razors

I LOVE this windproof jacket, keeps me and my nips toasty 

2- Rain comes suddenly, and frequently,  so pack waterproofs! Ones that aren’t from Aldi and that won’t let rain seep into your knickers -_-

3- The water is crystal clear and beautiful!  Just close your eyes and pretend the cold rain isn’t slapping your face and you will be transported to a tropical Malaysian beach

Things To Do At Tramore Beach

1. Enjoy The Walk To The Beach

There are not many beaches in the world where the walk from the car park is just as amazing as the beach itself!

The walk through the trees and fields is an enjoyable experience in its own right.

Stop complaining about how sand is getting in your shoes (like I did) and just enjoy it! 

You will be back in front of your office laptop in no time, so take a moment to appreciate your boss not breathing coffee breath in your ear holes

You will be spoiled with views of the coastline, along with amazing views of New Lake, Muckish, Aghla Beg, Aghla More, Mackoght, and Errigal.

2. Enjoy The Secluded Beach

As there are no roads to the beach you could have the whole beach to yourself!

Places To Visit Near Tramore Beach

You may as well visit some other cool spots near Tramore beach and further delay your inevitable return to your office for as long as possible 

So, we recommend you check out these places near Tramore Beach : 

1. Horn Head Loop

The Horn Head loop is an amazing driving or walking loop around the Horn Head Peninsula in the North-West of county Donegal.

 Horn Head is about 4 km North of Dunfanaghy.

The area is an Irish National Heritage Area and many amazing animals and birds can be seen when exploring here such as Grey Seals, razorbills,  Fulmars, Shags, Puffins and Cormorants .

The cliffs rise to a height of about 600ft and are home to some amazing sea birds such as the European Shag and Razorbill.

The area also contains many historic sights such as Neolithic stone circles and passage tombs. These are cool ancient burial chambers made of earth or stone. Think of the pyramids but no pyramid shape …

2. The Art House Ireland

The Art House Ireland is an art gallery situated in Dunfanaghy. The gallery showcases a range of amazing arts and crafts of the Wild Atlantic Way. 

The gallery was opened in 2011 by the artist Brian O’Doherty.

The Art House showcases many different works of art from landscapes, portraits, cityscapes and much more.

They also offer private commissions and a range of workshops where you can hone your artistic capabilities.

I’ll be the first to admit that my artistic abilities only stretch as far as drawing squiggly hairs on stick men BUT I can appreciate and respect the craft and talent of these Irish artists.

Let’s support local artists and the community there by buying some art! 

Because we all know Aunt Thelma keeps throwing away your Christmas present, time to get her something she will actually like! 

3. Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is an area of natural beauty in the heart of county Donegal. I LOVED this park SO MUCH!

We even got the chance to spot a waterfall!

The park also showcases the landscape of Donegal with valleys, lakes, mountains and green fields.

It’s also got LOADS of different flora and fauna, so it’s the perfect place for natural enthusiasts and hikers to explore.

Ps; swing by the cafe and get the lemon drizzle poppy cake, it’s incredible! 

4. Glenveagh Castle

Glenveagh Castle is nestled within the Glenveagh National Park.

The beautiful architecture and the national park’s backdrop make Glenveagh Castle a sight well worth seeing. 

Admittedly, we went there when there was a downpour of rain, but it was still beautiful! 

Exploring the castle, gardens and surrounding landscape offers a glimpse into Ireland’s past. There is also a really sweet tea room, with paninis and hot soups, yum!

5. Tropical World

Tropical World isn’t really talked about but it’s a really cool spot in Donegal.

 It is a fully licensed zoo in Letterkenny with a wide array of exotic creatures from butterflies to the world’s smallest monkeys.

This is a great place to visit and learn more about exotic creatures.

 It is also the perfect place to experience the sights and sounds of tropical areas and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the rainforest.

Seeing as I spend most of my life wishing I was in the tropics, grazing on fruit, I felt right at home …

6. The Workhouse – Donegal Famine Heritage Centre

The Workhouse, located in Dunfanaghy, is a renovated workhouse that now serves as a heritage centre which explores local history, culture and traditions. 

You can learn about the famine and life in Donegal in the past. I found this really interesting and to be honest , a bit sad

I hope we can learn from history so it never repeats itself

The Workhouse also hosts different workshops throughout the year and serves as the starting point for the Dunfanaghy Heritage Trail. 

The trail takes you through the village on a historical tour with an accompanying audio track and app.

7. Dunfanaghy Stables

Dunfanaghy Stables is an equestrian tourism destination based at Arnolds Hotel in Dunfanaghy.

They offer pony trekking and horse riding along the wild Atlantic Way, through the Irish countryside and along beaches. (how COOL eh ?! )

They have a varied selection of horses to match visitors’ horse riding capabilities, which is a nice way of saying if you are super short and are hopeless at horse riding, they have a sweet little pony to accommodate …..

 You can also take horseriding lessons at Dunfanaghy Stables.

8. Dunlewey Centre

The Dunlewey Centre offers a great experience to learn about the past and explore the local area. 

You can visit the homestead of the world-renowned weaver Manus Ferry and listen to stories from experienced tour guides. In the middle of the century many people came to this homestead to visit Manus Ferry and to purchase his tweed

You can take a boat trip around Dunlewey Lough and even see the Guinness Estate. The Dunlewey Centre also has a play area and bumper cars on site.

9. Mount Errigal

I didn’t tackle this myself but I plan to! Ate too many doughnuts and didn’t fit enough …

Mount Errigal is one of Irelands’ most impressive mountains with its sharp peak and incredible surrounding landscape.

The mountain stands 751 meters high and is the tallest one in Donegal. 

Mount Errigal is a great place to walk or hike and it offers amazing views of the surrounding area including Lough Dewey.

10. Fanad Head Lighthouse

Fanad Head Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world. It is located on the northern point of the Fanad Peninsula.

You can check out the visitor centre and also take a guided tour of the lighthouse.

About Maghera Beach

Maghera Beach, also known as Ardara Beach Donegal, is a picturesque coastal area in the Northwest of Ireland.

 Many tourists are attracted to the area due to its natural beauty, beautiful landscape and exciting caves.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a unique and rugged area, and Maghera Beach Ardara highlights this spectacular coastline’s beauty.

Maghera Beach can also be easily confused with two other beaches in Donegal. Maghery Beach Donegal and Magheroarty Beach Donegal.

Maghery Beach is located just south of Dungloe village in the west of Donegal and Magheraoarty Beach Donegal is located near Falcarragh, just 25 minutes from Dunfanaghy in the North of county Donegal.

The crystal clear water and soft sand of Maghera Beach make this area very enticing but the water and caves can be quite dangerous if you’re not careful.

We have shared some tips below on how to stay safe when you explore this location.

About Maghera Caves

One of the main reasons people visit Maghera Strand is to explore the Maghera Caves. There are not many beaches with caves as beautiful as the caves of Maghera.

Maghera Beach Caves Donegal have been formed over many years with the waves of the Atlantic Ocean carving them out from the limestone cliffs. 

Visitors are amazed by the intricacy of the rock formations within the cave system.

There is a folklore surrounding the Caves of Maghera that tell the story of a raid by Cromwellian attackers that sent locals hiding in the caves.

However, this story has been dismissed by historians as we know Cromwell never ventured this far North. It is more likely that a similar event occurred when locals hid from Viking raiders.

The stories of locals hiding in the caves also tell of a lone male survivor of a massacre fleeing to the caves with his dog. They crawled through the cave system in search of freedom. 

According to the story, the dog appeared 20km away in Glencolumbkille but the man was never seen again.

1. Location of Maghera Beach

Maghera Beach is located in Maghera Ardara Co. Donegal on the northern side of the Slieve League Peninsula. It is located approximately 3 kilometers from the village of Ardara.

The beach and caves are situated between Glenties and Portnoo, making it easy for visitors to reach from various directions. 

2. Is There Parking?

Yes, there is parking available near Maghera Beach. There is a car park which is run by a local and costs $3 to park there.

It is advised to give yourself plenty of time to secure a parking space and explore the area during peak tourist season (summer) as the area can get quite busy.

3. How To Reach The Beach And Caves

If you are driving from Ardara, take the N56 road for about 5.5 kilometres until you reach the beach parking area. There are signposts along the way to guide you.

Public transport options are limited in this rural area but you can get a bus to Ardara and then hire a taxi to take you to Maghera Beach.

We rented a car as it gave us flexibility and freedom. We recommend DiscoverCars.

Once you reach the car park it’s just a short stroll down to the beach and caves.

4. How To Enjoy The Caves Safely

If you want to check out sea caves in Ireland, Ardara Donegal Beach and Caves can be a great place to explore but it is very important to stay safe while doing so. 

It is crucial that you take note of the weather forecast and the tide before visiting the caves of Maghera. The Caves are only accessible when the tide is out.

Do not under any circumstances enter the caves if the tide is coming in. The Caves are only accessible when the tide is out.

So make sure you only enter the caves when the tide is out!

5. Do Not Swim At Maghera Beach!

Although the beautiful beach and pristine water of Maghera Beach can seem inviting it is not a safe place to swim.

Maghera Beach is known to be a dangerous place to swim due to strong currents and riptides.

There are plenty of great places to swim in Donegal so save your swimming for another location such as Narin (Portnoo) which is a blue-flag beach with lifeguards on duty in July and August.

Other tips : 

1- It gets windy, so pack layers 

2- Rain comes suddenly, pack waterproofs! 

3- The water is crystal clear and beautiful!  

4- You have to walk around 20 mins from the front gate to get to the caves

1. Assaranca Waterfall

This picturesque natural wonder is located near the town of Ardara just 1km from Maghera Beach. The waterfall cascades down the cliff into a rock pool below.

The natural beauty of this area attracts many visitors. It is easily accessible as it is a short walk from the roadside.

2. Glengesh Pass

This is a beautiful mountain road that winds through the landscape of Donegal. The hills and mountains surrounding the road make driving through Glengesh Pass a surreal experience.

This is one of the best ways to see the rugged landscape of Donegal while making your way through the countryside.

3. Slieve League

Slieve League is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. It is a must-visit location in Donegal. It is located along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the sea, cliffs, and surrounding landscapes. You can either drive to a viewpoint or you could also go for a hike in this area.

4. Glencolmcille Folk Village

8. Stephen Bennett Studio Gallery

This is an art gallery of the professional artist Stephen Bennett. Two rooms within the gallery contain some of Stephen’s original paintings along with an array of limited-edition prints.

The artworks include many paintings of Donegal landscapes and the people of Donegal. There are paintings and drawings of all sizes and styles. The paintings are very unique and it is a very enjoyable experience to stroll around the gallery to see the different artworks.

9. The Céilí House Bar

The Ceili House Bar is located in the small town of Ardara close to Maghera Beach and Caves. It is a Traditional Irish Music bar with a great atmosphere and amazing local musicians.

They host sessions each night throughout the summer months starting at 9.30 pm. There are weekend music sessions in the Winter months.

There is also accommodation available at the Ceili House bar. It is a great location to stay in while exploring Donegal if you want to experience rural Ireland and the Atlantic coastline.

 The beach and caves are situated between Glenties and Portnoo, making it easy for visitors to reach from various directions.

2. Is There Parking?

Yes, there is parking available near the Caves of Maghera. 

There is a car park which is run by a local and costs $3 to park there. 

It is advised to give yourself plenty of time to secure a parking space and explore the area during peak tourist season (summer) as the area can get quite busy.

Local tip – we went there in the winter and parking was free. It might not be the same in the summer

Tip 2- it rains a lot in the winter, so bring spare clothes ha!

3. How To Reach The Beach And Caves

If you are driving from Ardara, take the N56 road for about 5.5 kilometres until you reach the beach parking area.

 There are signposts along the way to guide you.

Public transport options are limited in this rural area but you can get a bus to Ardara and then hire a taxi to take you to Maghera Beach and Caves.

We rented a car as it gave us flexibility and freedom. We recommend DiscoverCars.

Once you reach the car park it’s just a short stroll down to the beach and caves.

4. How To Enjoy The Caves Safely

Maghera Beach and Caves can be a great place to explore but it is very important to stay safe while doing so. 

It is crucial that you take note of the weather forecast and the tide before visiting Maghera Caves. The Caves are only accessible when the tide is out.

Do not under any circumstances enter the caves if the tide is coming in. If you enter the caves at the wrong time and the tide comes in you could get stuck in the caves and drown.

So make sure you only enter the caves when the tide is out!

5. Do Not Swim At Maghera Beach!

Although the beautiful beach and pristine water of Maghera beach can seem inviting it is not a safe place to swim.

 Maghera Beach is known to be a dangerous place to swim due to strong currents and riptides.

There are plenty of great places to swim in Donegal so save your swimming for another location such as Narin (Portnoo) which is a blue-flag beach with lifeguards on duty in July and August.

Other tips : 

1- It gets windy, so pack layers 

2- Rain comes suddenly, pack waterproofs! 

3- The water is crystal clear and beautiful!  

4- You have to walk around 20 mins from the front gate to get to the caves

Places To Visit Near the Caves of Maghera:

1. Assaranca Waterfall

There are some beautiful places to see in the parish of Maghera including this picturesque natural wonder located near the town of Ardara just 1km from Maghera Beach. The waterfall cascades down the cliff into a rock pool below.

The natural beauty of this area attracts many visitors. It is easily accessible as it is a short walk from the roadside.

2. Glengesh Pass

This is a beautiful mountain road that winds through the landscape of Donegal. The hills and mountains surrounding the road make driving through Glengesh Pass a surreal experience.

This is one of the best ways to see the rugged landscape of Donegal while making your way through the countryside.

3. Slieve League

Slieve League is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. It is a must-visit location in Donegal. It is located along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the sea, cliffs, and surrounding landscapes. You can either drive to a viewpoint or you could also go for a hike in this area.

4. Glencolmcille Folk Village

The Glencolmcille Folk Village offers a glimpse into Ireland’s past, it is a living museum that shares the rich cultural heritage of Ireland.

Silver Strand Beach is another beautiful beach along the coastline of Donegal. This beautiful horseshoe-shaped beach is a great place to relax and unwind.

This is an art gallery of the professional artist Stephen Bennett. 

Two rooms within the gallery contain somStephen’sphens original paintings along with an array of limited edition prints.

The artworks include many paintings of the Donegal landscape and the people of Donegal. 

There are paintings and drawings of all sizes and styles. 

The paintings are very unique and it is a very enjoyable experience to stroll around the gallery to see the different artworks.

9. The Céilí House Bar

The Ceili House Bar is located in the small town of Ardara close to Maghera Beach and Caves. 

It is a Traditional Irish Music bar with a great atmosphere and amazing local musicians.

They host sessions each night throughout the summer months starting at 9.30 pm. There are weekend music sessions in the Winter months.

There is also accommodation available at the Ceili House bar. It is a great location to stay in while exploring Donegal if you want to experience rural Ireland and the Atlantic coastline.

10. Sliabh Liag Distillers – The Ardara Distillery

You can explore the Ardara Distillery and learn all about the art of making Irish whiskey in the beautiful town of Ardara.

1. Slieve League

This sacred and iconic mountain, Slieve League, is truly one of the best places to see in Donegal. With stunning coastal views as well as plenty of hiking trails to explore, it’s easy to understand why this place attracts so many visitors every year.

As a matter of fact, Slieve League is actually one of the top three highest sea cliffs in the world, with a staggering height of 1,972 feet (601 meters), which offers you the most breathtaking panoramic view of Donegal.

To put things in perspective, Slieve League is actually (3x) times higher than Ireland’s popular Cliffs of Moher and twice as tall as Paris’s Eiffel Tower (which is really high!)

It’s an hour’s drive away from Donegal Town and is located in Teelin, on the southwest coast of Donegal. The Slieve League has 2 car park spots that you can choose to park near the cliffs.

3. Fairy Bridges

Fairy Bridges is a series of peculiar rock formations that form natural arches near Ballyshannon beach, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. 

This natural splendor was formed due to the constant barrage of seawater over the past hundred years.

However, back in the 1700s, Irish locals believed that these arches were formed and haunted by local fairies, as some claimed these fairies could be heard when passing the bridge. 

Hence, the name “The Fairy Bridges.” 

If you have some time, look for the famous wishing chair, where you will find a unique rock formation that you can sit on (in fact, there’s a way to actually sit on the wishing chair).

The Best Way To Experience The Wishing Chair:

4. Ardnamona Woods

Ardnamona Wood nature reserve is a 456.6-hectare native oak woodland located roughly 5 km (3.1 miles) north-northeast of Donegal Town.

Most of the walking trails are approximately 2 km (1.2 mile) from start to finish, with stunning floral landscapes such as mosses, bluebells, and streams for little kids to explore.

6. Caves Of Maghera

You may visit Assaranca Waterfall at any time of year, but some have recommended that you visit this waterfall after a rainstorm, as you may catch a glimpse of rainbow rays near the stacked rocks from the top. 

One of the best things about Assaranca Waterfall is that it is highly accessible, even for those who have mobility issues, as the parking lot is just beside the waterfall, making it wheelchair friendly. 

If you want to enjoy this place for yourself, we suggest that you visit after the holiday weekend as it can be crowded at times.

8. Mount Errigal

One of the best things to do in Donegal, Ireland, is to visit Mount Errigal! 

This gigantic natural mountain in Gweedore, with its dramatic contours and a number of adrenaline-pumping hiking trails, will certainly leave you breathless (literally!). 

This Irish mountain is recognized as one of the tallest and steepest in Donegal’s Seven Sisters Mountain Range, with an astounding height of 2,464 feet (751 meters), which is higher than Slieve League and makes it one of the county’s most popular and challenging hiking treks to conquer.

9. Glenveagh National Park

If you have some time, be sure to try the Derrylahan Nature Trail, as it is one of the most popular hikes in the park as it is beginner-friendly (and kids-friendly) while providing stunning views of the Glenveagh Valley.

If you’re not sure what else to do in the park, be sure to visit the park’s visitor center to get help from friendly staff. This center is located near the car park, and it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This 1,200 acres of Ards Forest Park is just a short drive from Dunfanaghy, and it is managed by Coillte, one of Ireland’s best forest custodians, that helps manage this lovely woodland park with a nominal entrance fee of €5 ($5). (This fee helps to maintain and upkeep the park.)

Ards Forest Park is indeed one of Coillte’s most diverse parks as it has a wide variety of plants and forest critters to discover, as well as beautiful natural landscapes from beach sand dunes to woodland parks. 

If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of wild rabbits, red squirrels, foxes, and even hedgehogs within the park if you’re lucky! 

This park also has a children’s playground, a picnic spot, and even archeological tombs to explore, making it one of the best places to visit in Donegal, Ireland, for families or groups of nature enthusiasts.

12. Malin Head

Given its natural location, it is one of the best places in Ireland to see the Northern Light (Aurora Borealis). The northern lights in Ireland are usually visible from 9 pm to 1 am during the period from September through March.

13. Hike In Horn Head

This straightforward yet breathtaking coastal hike is only 2.6 kilometers (1.6 mile) long, and it can be completed in under 54 minutes. As you hike along this path, you may discover an Old Signal Tower, which was built during the Napoleonic Wars.

As you hike your way up, you may see several Atlantic wildlife, such as grey seals, nearby. However, do note that the weather can get very windy at times, so we strongly recommend that you hike cautiously.

Most importantly, do not get too close to the edge of the cliffs as it is a sheer drop of 250 meters down to a rocky beach. Just follow the hiking trail, and you’ll be safe!

14. Explore Donegal By Cycling Tour 

If you plan to enjoy the stunning views of Donegal on a bicycle, then be sure to try this 55-km (34 miles) cycling loop through Inis Eoghain Cycleway, which connects County Londonderry with Donegal’s Lough Swilly through the River Foyle. 

Most of this cycling route is completely traffic-free, and as you leave the city, the path ascends to An Grianán Aileach ( a famous hillfort in Inishowen that is part of the Irish National Monument) for stunning views of the Sperrin Mountains, Lough Swilly, and the Inishowen Peninsula.

Those who have tried this beautiful cycling path have suggested that the cycling path falls between an easy to moderate cycling route with hilly terrain and steep inclines to  An Grianán Aileach.

15. Golf at Cruit Island Golf Club

One of Donegal’s hidden gems for those who wish to test their golfing skills under the coastal Donegal breeze, then be sure to play golf at Cruit Island Golf Club ,  one of the best golf courses in Donegal.

Michael Doherty, a professional golfer from Derry Gold Club, first built Cruit Island’s 9-hole golf course back in 1986. 

Additionally, the club takes great pride in being one of the first golfing clubs in Ireland to grant membership to women. Eileen Oglesby served as the club’s first female president in 1994, making it the first Irish golf club to do so.

This 9-hole golf course is a great training ground for experienced golfers as it has a few undulating sand bunkers and coastal wind that can tease your golf game. 

Nonetheless, it is still one of the most enjoyable golf courses to try and one of the most fun things to do in Donegal!

This 75-minute boat trip from Donegal Town’s harbor will cruise around seven green islands near Donegal with plenty of amenities, such as an air-conditioned lounge or open-aired deck to enjoy the majestic Atlantic Ocean view and witness real Atlantic wildlife such as grey seals.

This 160-seated vessel boat ride has made 2-3 trips daily since 2006, subject to weather conditions, and is fully equipped with a bar and toilets. This boat ride also allows pets to be onboard and has wheelchair access.

28. Lough Eske Castle

This newly renovated Lough Eske Castle, which was once ruined 15 years ago, has been transformed into a luxurious 5-star hotel.

Nonetheless, it is still one of the best things to see when you visit Donegal, as this castle was once built by the O’Donnell family, who dominated most of Donegal in the 15th century.

33. Tropical World Zoo

This vibrant, tropical world zoo in Letterkenny is a fun option for all seasons of Ireland, with plenty of activities you can do. To keep the tropical animals of this zoo warm and cozy, the zoo is almost entirely enclosed.

If you like birds and bugs, be sure to try Tropical World’s free-flight Butterfly House, where you can see butterflies in flight and other exotic birds in their aviaries.

You and your loved one can enjoy various slides, including tubes, flumes, multi-slides, and other speedy rides with light effects inside. 

However, those under 1.1 meters (3 ft 7in) (i.e. toddlers) are not permitted to use the slides or enter the stairway of the above slides as a safety measure, as it can get rowdy with teenagers.
